Our Faculty Achieves International Success at ICBME 2026
Our Faculty contributed to ICBME 2026 in Thailand through an international organisational role and a first-prize oral presentation.
The 8th International Conference on Biosciences and Biomedical 2026 (ICBME 2026) was held in Hat Yai, Thailand, from 26 to 28 August 2026 under the theme “Innovative Biosciences and Biomedical for a Sustainable Future.” Bringing together researchers in biosciences, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, molecular biology, environmental sciences, and related disciplines, the conference attracted broad international academic participation.
The face-to-face scientific programme took place at Buri Sriphu Hotel on 26 August, followed by online scientific sessions and the closing programme on 27 August. The programme on 28 August included the ICBME Committee Business Meeting, a campus visit, and cultural activities.
The conference was organised under the leadership of the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in cooperation with international university partners. While Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Ondokuz Mayıs University were among the main organisers, Marmara University served as a co-organiser alongside institutions including Universitas Udayana, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universitas Pattimura, and Shandong University. Marmara University was therefore represented not only through its scientific contributions but also through an active role in the conference’s international organisational structure.
Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit Represented the Faculty
Marmara University Faculty of Science was represented at ICBME 2026 by Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, faculty member in the Department of Biology, and Chair of the Division of Botany.
Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit also served as an International Executive Member of the conference. The involvement of scientists from numerous countries in the conference’s international organisational structure highlighted ICBME’s expanding role as a platform for global academic cooperation.
Researchers from regions extending from Europe to East Asia participated in the conference. Scientists from several Turkish universities also contributed to the scientific programme through oral and poster presentations delivered during both face-to-face and online parallel sessions.
First Prize for a Marmara University-Led Study
The study conducted under the scientific leadership of Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit was awarded first prize in the oral presentation category at ICBME 2026.
The study was prepared through the joint scientific contributions of researchers from Marmara University, Justus Liebig University Giessen, and Haliç University. The research team comprised Uğur Şen, Kardelen Çılgın, Mehmet Emin Uras, Gizem Fidan, Salim Süner, and Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit. The study represents a successful example of interdisciplinary and international scientific collaboration involving researchers from different universities.
The research focused on the genome-wide identification and comprehensive characterisation of the NRAMP gene family in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). NRAMP genes play important roles in metal transport, homeostasis, and stress responses in plants. By examining the structural and functional characteristics of this gene family, the study provided valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of cotton plants to metal stress.
The first-prize recognition received by this Marmara University-led study at an international conference represents a significant achievement in terms of the Faculty of Science’s international scientific visibility, high-quality research output, and inter-university research partnerships.
ICBME 2027 in Bali and ICBME 2028 in Türkiye
Plans for the future of the conference series were also discussed during the international committee meeting held as part of ICBME 2026.
Bali, Indonesia
Marmara University and the Faculty of Science will continue to contribute to the international organisation and coordination of the conference in 2027.
Türkiye
The host city and university are expected to be determined during the international committee meeting to be held in Bali in 2027.
These developments demonstrate the continuing engagement of Marmara University Faculty of Science in international academic networks. They also underline the Faculty’s role in international scientific events not only as a participant but also as an organising and decision-making academic partner.
Marmara University Faculty of Science congratulates Prof. Dr. İbrahim İlker Özyiğit, who represented our University, contributed to the international organisation of ICBME 2026, and provided scientific leadership to the research team that received first prize in the oral presentation category, as well as all members of the research team. We wish them continued success and look forward to the further development of international scientific collaborations.
