Dear Members of Our Faculty and Dear Students,

Under Presidential Decision No. 5868, published in the Official Gazette on 25 July 2022, the Faculties of Arts and Sciences at 15 universities were closed, while Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences were established at 15 universities and Faculties of Science at 12 universities.

Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences began its activities in 1982 following the appointment of Prof. Dr. Hakkı Dursun YILDIZ as its founding dean. Under the distinguished leadership of our late professor, the Faculty made highly significant contributions at both national and international levels in the fields of natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences. On this occasion, I respectfully commemorate and express my gratitude to all administrators, academics and administrative personnel who have contributed to this process of scientific development since the Faculty’s establishment.

The academic staff of the Faculty of Science, where I was appointed as the founding acting dean on 22 August 2022, have achieved significant success in both education and research through scientific studies of remarkable quality and quantity. They have also made valuable contributions to the fundamental sciences and related fields of technology. These contributions will continue at an accelerated pace through the restructuring process, and the motivation provided by our new institutional structure will carry our achievements even further.

During this new period, science will be regarded as the principal criterion in decision-making and administrative processes, and the highest possible level of academic participation will be encouraged to enable collective wisdom. While continuously working to improve our academic performance and support technological development, we must also educate the young academics and researchers of the future.

We are living in a period in which postgraduate and even undergraduate students are supported in conducting scientific research through publicly funded projects under the supervision of their professors and even in serving as project leaders. To contribute to Türkiye’s research capacity in both quantitative and qualitative terms, we should encourage our students to participate in project-based support programmes and scientific research processes.

In this context, we must keep our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and laboratories up to date and continuously develop them in accordance with advances in science and technology. In addition to internal institutional support, project-based scientific studies funded by external sources, particularly TÜBİTAK, will play a major role in this development.

Our primary goal in the newly established Faculty of Science is to achieve the scientific advances required by the information age, or digital age, as rapidly and comprehensively as possible.

Our mission is to educate students who can examine nature and natural/scientific processes through reason and cause-and-effect relationships; who possess strong analytical thinking, R&D and innovation skills; who are open to change and socially aware; who have a well-developed sense of social responsibility; and who have acquired the fundamental knowledge required by the contemporary world.

I believe that our University and all academics of the Faculty of Science will make significant contributions to our continuing process of restructuring and development.

Kind regards,

Prof. Dr. Ali Rıza ÖZKAYA

Dean, Faculty of Science
